Better Days: 150th Anniversary "First to Vote" Celebration

A Celebration of 150 Years of Utah Women’s Suffrage

One hundred and fifty years ago, on February 12, 1870, the Utah Territorial Legislature passed a women’s suffrage bill that allowed female citizens to vote under the same laws as the men. Join Better Days 2020, Utah Department of Heritage and Arts, and Utah Cultural Alliance at the Utah State Capitol to commemorate and celebrate this important anniversary and our Utah HERitage of women who continued to fight for representation and improve their communities.

Bring your students to the Utah State Capitol throughout the day on February 12, 2020 to participate, learn, and share in this celebration!

“Utah Women Working for the Vote and Beyond” exhibit featuring Brooke Smart’s illustrations and objects that tell the story of Utah women's work for voting rights 

Capitol scavenger hunt with prizes

Storytellers featuring women from Utah history

Utah HERitage swag, videos about the history, other informational displays

12:30pm:

Sing-along of “Champions of Change” song with hundreds of students from across the state in the Capitol Rotunda! 

Suggestions to Prepare for the Event:

Listen to and learn the “Champions of Change” song and participate in the sing-along

Create posters honoring your favorite Utah woman either from history or the present and bring them to showcase during the sing-along
