Celebrating Distinguished Rotarians: Gene Banks and Mike Deputy Honored for a Lifetime of Service 

Founded in 1911, the Rotary Club of Salt Lake City has a proud and enduring legacy of service to the community. Its members—leaders in fields such as banking, real estate, and medicine—have long made significant contributions to the economic vitality and well-being of our state. 

As part of Rotary International, a global network of more than 1.2 million neighbors, friends, leaders, and problem-solvers, Rotary Club 24 members are dedicated to creating lasting change—locally, globally, and within themselves. For over 110 years, Rotary’s “people of action” have brought passion, energy, and intelligence to sustainable projects in literacy, peace, water, health, and more. 

A Signature Fundraiser Honoring Leadership and Service 

The Distinguished Rotarian Celebration is held every two years as a fundraiser to support the philanthropic work of the Rotary Club of Salt Lake City through the Salt Lake City Rotary Foundation. This year’s event will be held on October 17, 2025, at 6:00 p.m. at the Sheraton Hotel in downtown Salt Lake City and will honor Gene Banks and Mike Deputy for their exceptional service and impact. 

Gene Banks: A Legacy of Leadership and Global Impact 

Gene Banks, known for his sharp wit and immense generosity, has been a lifelong overachiever. As a father of eight, he rose to success in the securities industry, managing teams across Arizona, Hawaii, and Utah—often simultaneously. His leadership extended across church, academic, civic, and scouting communities. 

A world-class Rotarian, Gene chaired the 2007 Rotary International Convention in Salt Lake City, welcoming 24,000 attendees. Once listed among Utah’s 100 Most Powerful People, he has served on numerous civic, financial, and tourism boards. His humble, patient, and forgiving nature draws people to him, and his service has improved the lives of thousands across the globe. 

Mike Deputy: Building Legacy Through Business and Service 

Founder of 1580 Utility Trailer in 1982, Mike Deputy grew his family-owned dealership into a company of more than 100 employees. Now operated by the second generation, the business continues to thrive. 

“Without a doubt, he is one of the smartest men I have known,” said fellow Rotarian Duane Millard. “He built an impressive company in Colorado and an even more impressive one in Utah. His children carry on that legacy.” 

Mike has not only led in business but has also been a generous supporter of Rotary International and numerous charitable organizations. He has served as President of Rotary Club 24, as a mentor and reading coach at Franklin Elementary (a club-adopted school), and as a leader in his church. 

Known for his curious and creative spirit, Mike even pursued vocal performance—his singing once echoing through Waimea Canyon, “the Grand Canyon of the Pacific.” He is, truly, a gentle and remarkable giant among men.
