March Newsmaker Breakfast: Volunteerism and Civic Engagement in America

The Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute announces its next Newsmaker Breakfast, a monthly event highlighting important issues impacting Utahns.

Join prominent leaders for a discussion on the importance of volunteerism and civic engagement and how Americans can stay engaged in an exceedingly turbulent and divided time. We welcome Utah native Dr. Jody Olsen, who served as the 20th director of the Peace Corps from 2018 to 2021. Dr. Olsen will share insights on the current state of service organizations and volunteerism in the U.S. and around the globe.

Utah ranks #1 in the nation for volunteering and civic engagement. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 40.7% of Utahns formally volunteered in 2021, strengthening community development and contributing to a better future for all Utahns. Nationally, however, the volunteer rate has fallen to the lowest rate in nearly three decades, leaving non-profits, aid organizations, and other groups straining to provide services.

Gardner Institute director Natalie Gochnour will moderate the discussion. Media are invited to attend and ask questions.
