On March 19, 2026, the Utah Chamber and Salt Lake Chamber will host the Utah Rising Webinar, Water 101, featuring Dr. Brian Steed, Great Salt Lake Commissioner, and Executive Director of the Janet Quinney Lawson Institute for Land, Water and Air.
Utah’s water security and the health of our waterways are critical to our economic prosperity. Dr. Steed will explain the "what, so what and now what?” of water in Utah with a focus on what’s ahead for Utah’s long-term water resilience. Attendees will gain insight into the economics, policy and stewardship of water in Utah and how water impacts businesses and communities statewide, particularly through the Colorado River and Great Salt Lake.

About Our Speaker: Dr. Brian Steed
Dr. Brian Steed is the Executive Director of the Janet Quinney Lawson Institute for Land, Water and Air at Utah State University. Since May 2023, he has also served as the inaugural Commissioner of the Great Salt Lake.
Before joining the Institute, he served as the Executive Director of the Utah Department of Natural Resources from 2019-2022 and in Washington, D.C., as the Bureau of Land Management’s deputy director for policy and programs, exercising the authority of the director from 2017-2019. Prior to the BLM, he was chief of staff to Utah Congressman Chris Stewart from 2013-2017. Dr. Steed has also served as the deputy county attorney for Iron County and taught political science and economics at USU.
A native of Logan, Utah, Dr. Steed attended USU, where he earned both a BA and MA in political science. He also holds a Juris Doctor and a Certificate in Natural Resources and Environmental Law from S.J. Quinney College of Law at the University of Utah, and a Ph.D. in public policy with an emphasis in environmental policy from Indiana University Bloomington.
He currently lives in Logan where he enjoys all things outdoors with his wife and three children.
