Wendover Airfield is the most original remaining World War II Army Air Force training base in the country. There are 85 of the original 668 structures remaining including Hangars, Barracks, Dining Hall, Officer's Club, Control Tower, Norden Bombsight Vault and more. There is a museum in the Brinkman Service Club which is open 6 days a week. (Check the website for hours). Daily tours are given to other buildings starting at the Brinkman Service Club.
The airfield was a training base for B-17 and B-24 Heavy Bombers. Twenty of the bomb groups were assembled and trained including 12 groups for the Mighty 8th Air Force. The site was chosen for the top secret work of the Manhattan Project. The 509th Composite Group of B-29's trained here for the atomic mission delivery. The 216th Base Unit (Special) assembled and tested prototype atomic weapon designs although none of these had any nuclear material in them.
We are located just minutes south of Interstate 80 exit 1 in Wendover Utah. Come visit us and 'Walk Where They Walked'.
